Both online and “IRL” (in real life), people have asked me about Love Beauty and Planet. It’s been recommended to me. Love Beauty & Planet has also been highly requested for review. Until now, I’ve intentionally avoided purchasing Love Beauty and Planet. I‘ve changed my stance on this because of a recent product launch, and we’ll get into both my reluctance and what changed my mind. A quick note to say that this is a bit different than the typical product review or brand review.Â
Why i first avoided Love Beauty & Planet (Conflicted)
Back when Love Beauty and Planet was first released, I noticed it everywhere, and that struck me as odd. Suddenly, this eco-friendly beauty brand was EVERYWHERE. As someone who loves natural brands, this immediately stood out. Natural brands historically struggle to get widespread attention. So the fact that this brand was in literally every grocery store I shop seemed off. And I was correct. Love Beauty and Planet is a Unilever brand. That same parent company owns many other “traditional” brands/companies such as Dove and Axe. AKA, the parent company does not put its sustainability and “eco friendliness” at the front of their branding. What Unilever did was capitalize on the eco friendly movement and launch their own “eco friendly” line.
And thus came my internal conflictions with Love Beauty and Planet.
It felt like either
Option 1: Support a company who uses their overall earnings in a non-sustainable way
OR
Option 2: Use my dollar to show Love Beauty & Planet support and therefore show Unilever that sustainable brands/companies can also be profit earning.Â
Option 1 felt like to me supporting something I didn’t want to, and simultaneously taking my business away from companies who do their best all the time, not just with one particular line.Â
But Option 2 felt like a way to lead to bigger change by swaying a large corporation to change its own practices.
And honestly, this choice has always been hard, so I’ve previously opted to simply avoid. I’d avoid when friends talked about the brand. I’d avoid when the products were raved about or scrutinized online.
And up until now, I didn’t talk about Love Beauty and Planet because it felt like I myself couldn’t come to a conclusion, so how could I share that with you wavy friends? But something DID change, and that’s what we’re going to talk about.Â
keep in mine these are my personal opinions and speculations….
- “Of course they can use all recycled plastic, it’s their own scrap from Unilever companies.” There’s a constant creation of “recycled” material. They’re just doing that to create greater profit margins.
- “….does it really matter if it’s their scraps and that helps save them money? It’s still a recycled material.”
- “Should we really support greenwashing?” (note: Greenwashing is using marketing tactics to make a product or company appear more eco-friendly than it actually is). Arguably, Unilever is greewashing with the company Love Beauty & Planet because the revenue still goes to Unilever.Â
What Changed? What do i support from Love Beauty & Planet?
One day I was simply browsing hair care products(as I do constantly for you wavy friends and my own hair) when I saw the Love Beauty & Planet Clean Oceans lines. Yes, lines! there are TWO Love Beauty & Planet Clean Oceans lines. According to Love Beauty and Planet, “This limited edition bottle is made from 100% ocean bound plastic bottles, gathered from within 9.3 miles of the Taiwanese coastline and transformed into this special bottle.”
Um what?! That changes things. I love that these recycled materials were actually collected from a dirty beach and transformed into bottles for these two collections. So while I’m not certain about every Love Beauty & Planet line, I support and encourage the purchasing of these Clean Ocean Edition Lines. Both collections are friendly for your waves too! They’re sulfate and silicone free. The two lines are the Blue Green Algae &Â Eucalyptus, and the Sea Salt & Bergamot line. Of these descriptions, I’d rather recommend the Blue Green Algae and Eucalyptus line because sea salt can be drying for some wavies. But please let me know if you’ve tried either line and your opinions! At this time, these are the only products I personally will buy from Love Beauty & Planet. That could change in the future though.Â
