(critical) review: aussie sprunch mousse

My hair loves mousse. In fact, I think most wavies can really benefit from mousse. That’s why I wrote my whole post about TK mousses for wavy hair. But I thought it would be beneficial to share about a mousse that I do not enjoy, and to tell you wavy friends why. That mousse is the Aussie Sprunch Mousse & Leave-In Conditioner w/ Jojoba & Sea Kelp for Curly Hair.  Problem #1? That name! Just kidding, but it is a doozy to write out.

Now before you think I’m knocking Aussie, just stop. I absolutely love Aussie. My favorite gel and two of my top mousses are by this brand. But there are a few things that really missed the mark…

Why was the sprunch mousse so exciting?

It was marketed as a a mousse and leave-in conditioner. As a wavy, my only issue with mousse is that it sometimes can be drying over time. So I thought this was about to me my forever holy grail product. Perhaps that is why I was so disappointed.

problem #1: not enough hold

To be fair, this mousse does say it only has light hold. That was my fault that I expected more. This just didn’t have enough hold and my hair ended up frizzy. The ironic thing is that the label simultaneously says “24 hour curl lock” and “flexible hold.” Hmmmm…. I tried to combat this by adding in more mousse, but that worsened issue #2……

Problem #2: Weighed down hair

The ingredients that were meant to help moisturize the hair did….but at the cost of my wave pattern, My hair was not as wavy because it was much heavier than normal. Combine that with the frizz from lack of hold and it was really quite a mess.

Problem #3: Build Up

This mousse is….producty. To say the least. My hair/head felt gross on day 2. Normally, I go about 4 days between washes. And this was regardless of workouts etc. My hair was just looking weighed down, greasy, and frizzy all at the same time. Not a good look.

Overall Thoughts

This product was disappointing because it sounds like the perfect product: a moisturizing mousse. But it missed the mark by a long shot with my waves. From frizzy on day one to gross on day two, there just wasn’t a situation where my waves even looked good. I’d say skip this one and go for Aussie Headstrong Volume Mousse instead!

Thanks for this review 🙂 I had been looking for this at my local stores but only found the sprunch hair spray. After reading your impression I will def pass on this one. I don’t need any product that weighs down my waves or feels yucky in a day or 2!! I returned my Aussie Headstrong mousse to Target as it felt too producty. When I refreshed, I could not SOTC. I do use and enjoy the IF gel though.

No problem Heather! Oh yea, if you thought Headstrong mousse was producty, definintely steer clear of the sprunch and miracle curls mousses! Yes the aussie instant freeze gel is great! My go to 🙂
